Is there a man on the moon? Is the moon made of green cheese? Is the moon a balloon?

All these questions about the enigmatic nature of earth’s lonesome satellite remain unanswered in the kaleidoscopic new video for Phil Thornalley’s supercalifragilistic new pop offering “Mister Moonlight”.

Video director E.I.E.I.Oh, with his cheeky sidekick A.I.Oh, have decided to take us all on a fantabulous musical trip; part yellow submarine, part yellow brick road. An audio visual adventure celebrating the eponymous, cheery, but sadly missing in action, Mister Moonlight. The
cheeky video features the singer’s emphasised eyebrows and elastic lips, magically melted into a singing full moon that stays high, high in the sky watching the chaotic cartoon world below.

Musically the cellos chug, the violins glide, and the drums and bass stomp their way through this bouncy pop confection earnestly requiring communication be restored with the big yellow circle in the sky.

Underwater backing singers gaze skyward as the lead singer coaxes the celestial body to return, pleading “the stars are shining just for you, mister moonlight”.

The chorus tearfully chimes “we miss you, please come home tonight”.

Yes, dear reader, it’s a full moon fever.

Besides, how many kazoo solos have you heard in the 21st century?

The three track Mr Moonlight EP is out now and includes 2 non-album album tracks. The album, “Holly Would” is out now in Lojinx CD and digital.

See the animated lyric video for Phil Thornalley’s Shipwrecked Love

Phil explains: “Whilst improvising on my old piano one day i found a cool repeating motif and, to me, it suggested the ebb and flow of a rising tide. Shit got sea faring dude!”

After a while i found the lyrics to suit the simple melody. The words that came to me felt impressionistic rather than literal and i soon had a song about disintegrating romance. But not a sea shanty. No fair isle sweaters or captain birds eye beards. More the spirit of Robinson Crusoe rather than rock and roll cruise ship.

With the help of Karl, a string bass player, we created this minimal orchestral arrangement mirroring the pulsing piano. Added some vocoder harmonies to the singer’s plaintive plea. And a touch of flute.

Then, drum roll please, my collaborator, ac (head at record company lojinx) created this wonderful lyric video with, perhaps, a french impressionist feel.

Cascading warm, natural colours and sweeping brush strokes. Like Van Gogh on vacation.

As source material he used a film i had made on a beach holiday in January. then he added my scrawled handwriting that somehow became a wannabe Cezanne’s delicate touch. Pretty remarkable eh?

And that’s the salty sea tale of how a sad song became this visual feast.

“and so begins, the journey’s end”

Disclaimer: no fish were battered in the making of this video.
